First Moscow optometry laboratory for training professionals in optical eyesight correction has opened recently.
All necessary facilities for the lab were bought in Japan. The lab consists of three modules, main of which can host 12 people – 6 patients and 6 optometrists. Here future professional can practice eyesight diagnostics with slit lamp, foropter and chart panel.
Another module is aimed at thorough studies of eye’s organs- it is equipped with computer perimeter (for studying eye ground), a “non-mydriatic” (a camera for examining eye ground without pupil dilatation by means of midriatic drugs), and a cornea-topograph (for mapping cornea).
The third module looks like the first one, but its slit lamp has a video camera for broad casting images to laptops or displays. The lab also has all necessary equipment for distant learning.
Russia doesn’t list “optometry” as a higher education qualification, and professional standards for new specialty are currently being developed.
