Amazing discoveries waited for archeologists in the historical center of Smolensk; it was here around the main square of Smolensk were unassailable walls of the fortress constructed by Fyodor Kon’ once towered.
Remains of fortified walls were the first find of the experts. The builders barely cut off a slope of an earthen height when they saw the base of Smolensk Kremlin. The base had been carefully investigated and conserved, and one of the elements of a conduit had been constructed over it.
Some more days of laborious work lead to another triumph of archeologists. The new find was an earthen fortification that dated back to the 15th – 16th centuries. Here they also found remains of a defensive wooden poling 40 to 50 cm thick. It was an additional fortification to the earthen crest.
Both the rampart and the poling bear traces of fire. Archeologists assume that the fortifications suffered during one of the city sieges. Today the precious finds have been cleared, fixed and preserved for further detailed research.
