Scientists from Russia, USA, Germany and Canada have finished deciphering nuclear genome of a mysterious hominin, which bone was found in Denisov cave by Russian archeologists.
The 3-billion-letter genome helped understand that hominin’s DNA looked more like Neanderthal DNA, than Homo sapiens; however, it had diverged from Neanderthals about 640 thousand years ago.
Interesting results emerged after comparing a hominin’s DNA to several modern human populations – evidence of interspecies crossing has been detected. Melanesians, inhabiting islands, located north-eastwards from Australia, appeared to have up to 1/20 genetic material from Denisovans.
