Archeological Excavations to Help Establish Real Age of Samara
Samara

Archaeological works will be started in Samara in spring 2011 in order to establish the date of the citys foundation.

The team created specifically for this matter has already defined the most perspective areas for excavations. The work schedule with persons in charge has already been confirmed.

Historical materials will be studied in close cooperation with experts from neighboring regions and cities of the Volga Region and the Russian State Archive.

The date of Samaras foundation is still counted from the origin of the fortress, i.e. 1586. Historians assume, however, that another date must be considered as the citys foundationy date: it is the year of the first record of the name of Samara, which is 1361.
