Nizhni Novgorod Votes against Raising of Water Level in Volga

Yesterday, January, 26th, results of a sign-in of Nizhni Novgorod dwellers to the president of Russia were aired at the press conference Cheboksary Hydroelectric Power Station: 30 years of trouble.

Almost 50 thousand persons have stated their disagreement with the position of the federal authorities that instructed RusHydro JSC to prepare statement of work for raising the level of the Cheboksary water basin by 5 meters. The petition against this project was initiated by the head of the ecology center Dront Askhat Kayumov.

It should be noted that in case of raising Volga level inhabitants of Nizhni Novgorod and the Nizhni Novgorod Region will suffer, since almost 90 thousand hectares of lands or 350 thousand hectares of densely populated and economic territories of Nizhni Novgorod, Vorotynsky and Lyskovsky Districts will be flooded.

The major problem for Nizhni Novgorod is the underflooding of the transfluvial part of the city, which threatens loss of 39 per cent of the total area of building development.
