Biggest Wildlife Preserve Sestroretsk Bog to Appear in Petersburg

Petersburg government has confirmed the decision on establishment of the largest of natural wildlife preserves of regional value existing now Sestroretsk Bog.
The wildlife preserve will be established on the area of 1 thousand 900 hectares on the territory of Europes biggest marsh massif entering into the city boundaries and never exposed to drainage. This unique wildlife preserve is of great importance for preservation of birds.
Now fines for disturbance of the natural wildlife preserve are too small. They do not prevent people from making fires and cutting down trees, therefore penalties are planned to be raised.
The government has also confirmed the decision on establishment of the smallest nature sanctuary of regional value in Petersburg Petrovsky Pond in Primorski District. Its area is around 3 hectares. About 15 species of birds nest there and over 60 sorts of moss grow there. However, the value of the pond isn't limited to it: it was formed on the place of a huge granite boulder, which had been shifted to Senatskaya Square and became the basis for the monument to Peter I.
