War History Reserve to Appear in Arkhangelsk
The New Dvina Fortress

The RF Ministry of Culture has developed and confirmed the Concept of turning the New Dvina Fortress into a museum.

In accord with the given concept, the fortress area will get the status of a war history reserve museum.

The New Dvina Fortress was constructed in the mouth of Northern Dvina, on Linsky Island in 1701. It was built under personal control of Peter I for the defense of Arkhangelsk fairway and repelling attacks of the Swedes in the Northern War. It was considered one of the best fortresses in Russia. However, in 1856 it was abandoned.

Throughout its entire history the fortress only once accepted a battle which, however, changed the course of the Northern War and protected the only Russian port at that time. From Soviet times the fortress housed a children's colony, which existed there till 2006.
