The reindeer has become one of the wonders of the Finno-Ugric world.
“According to results of the international competition “Seven miracles of the Finno-Ugric world” the winner in the Nature nomination is the reindeer – the animal taking the most important place in the traditional household of aboriginal smaller peoples of Taimyr Peninsula” - administration of Taimyr of Krasnoyarsk Territory has informed.
According to its data the peninsula now has more than 72 thousand house reindeer and around 485 thousand wild reindeer.
The international Internet competition “Seven wonders of the Finno-Ugric world” was held in Russia, Hungary, Finland, and Estonia. The selection of candidates was conducted in four categories: Nature, Culture, Monuments and constructions, and Holidays.
It was decided to define seven winners in each nomination. As a result 28 sites were recognized as wonders of the Finno-Ugric world, among them Barsova Mountain near Surgut in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Region, Komi national park Jugyd va, disappearing Veps Lake of Shimozero, ancient labyrinths of Samis, and others. The most interesting nature sanctuaries, monuments of history and culture of northern people were defined by Internet users from different countries.
