State and church to develop tourism on Solovki

Solovki Islands, notable for world-known 16th century architectural ensemble of monastery and museum of GULAG need a long-term program for development of tourist infrastructure. Russian government in co-operation with church have worked it out. 10 billions rubles are required for realization of the program.

      
The program includes reconstruction of Solovetsky monastery and developing of tourist infrastructure in the region. This includes construction of roads, hotels and airport. The existing airfield is very old. Moreover, it is planned to build a new mooring for surface-effect vessels. It will be constructed in the settlement of Letnyaa Zolotitsa, where it is supposed to build a tourist complex.

      The tour operators organizing trips to Solovki say the tourist flow has increased considerably last time. It has reached 40 thousand people. This is 5 times more than earlier. 

      Solovki Monastery is notable for unusual architecture of Transfiguration cathedral and its huge size and for fortress walls made of cyclopic-size stones. This fortress, constructed in the end of 16th century; met challenges of artillery even in 19th century.
