Yelena Bonner - the widow of academician Andrei Sakharov - has died today after a long disease, aged 88.
The well-known human rights defender passed away in Boston, but will be laid to rest in Moscow. The farewell ceremony will be held in the town on Brookline on Tuesday.
According to Yelena Bonner’s will, her body will be cremated, and the urn with ashes will be buried at the Vostryakovsky Cemetery in Moscow, next to remains of her husband, mother and brother.
Yelena Bonner married Andrei Sakharov in 1972. 3 years later she represented her husband at the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Oslo. In 1980 Yelena Bonner joined Andrei Sakharov in his exile to Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod). Yelena Bonner spent the last years of her life in the USA.
