Kazan Cathedral to Regain its Former Looks

St. Petersburg is getting ready for celebrations of the 200th anniversary of its famous Kazan Cathedral.

Large-scale restoration works are being carried out there in view of the anniversary. The main task of the restorers is recreation of the altar iconostasis in the Cathedral’s Northern side-chapel. In due time, when the cathedral housed the Religion and Atheism Museum, the iconostasis was totally lost. Now the iconostasis is being reconstructed in accordance with its old photos of 1909 – 1911.

Columns of the Kazan Cathedral are washed with natural children's soap and rigid hair brushes. Splits and cracks are strengthened with special mastic. Afterwards the stone will be tinted with lime milk to give it a warm beige shade. Altogether the specialists will repair 40 columns that stand in the first row.
