Researchers from Russia created nano-coatings for rocket nozzles and important components of combat aircrafts.
Burning problem of space industry is building vehicles for traveling to other planets. Temperature of plasma, flowing though rocket nozzles, sometimes exceeds 10000îÑ, and no natural materials can survive this temperature. Even tungsten melts at 3400îÑ, and ceramic materials are destroyed by such enormous temperatures.
Researchers from Moscow and Tomsk designed composite materials, which can get through extremely high temperatures and are able to restore their structure after aggressive conditions disappear. During tests these “smart” materials survived 100 times of plasma exposure.
Coatings, based upon new materials, double lifetime of steel, for instance.
