On Wednesday a shark attacked a man swimming near the Russian shores of the Sea of Japan and bit off both of his hands. A doctor from Primorye Territory regional medical center said the man had been taken to the hospital in a very seriuos condition.
"The surgery lasted for several hours. After that, the young man was taken to an intensive care unit. His condition is not life-threatening now", he added.
The new shark attack has been today near the Zheltukhin island in Russia's Far East. A teenager was injured. According to preliminary data, he has lost a part of his leg. He has been brought to the regional hospital, there is no information about his condition yet.
The member of the region's administration said they prepare to close beaches in several districts. The authorities have already closed beaches in the Khasansky region. Currently, 42 members of the Ministry for Emergencies, backed up by 6 special waterborne platforms, are informing populace about the emerging threat. They are also patroling the water area.
An ichthyologist from the Institute of Marine Biology in the Far East said the sharks attack was most likely related to feeding grounds as anchovies move towards shallower waters to warm themselves, though this usually occurs at the beginning of summer.
