Activists from the EKA environmental movement are starting a long-term crusade against carrier bags with a flashmob on Pushkinskaya Square in Moscow on Thursday. Members of the flashmob "Unpack!" were dressed up as "killer bags" to inform shoppers in central Moscow about some facts of abuse of environment by the plactic trash.
Plastic bags represent about 10 per cent of all daily rubbish worldwide. Every year the discarded polyurethane kills 1 million birds, hundreds of thousands of marine mammals and uncountable fish.
"Today's action is just a start for us. We are going to organize more events of this kind. We also plan to work with shops promoting them as eco-friendly places and offering their customers special eco-friendly bags", atyana Kargina, EKA’s press-secretary said.
Members of the Duma’s committee on natural resources and ecology have backed EKA’s initiatives. Now they are discussing a draw which is to limit the use of plastic bags in Russia. Today about 20 countries have laws for the plastic bags' limitation.
"It is refreshing to know that business also reacts to the new market's demandes. The number of online shops selling long lasting carriers is constantly growing", Kargina added.
