55 and currently unemployed, the Russian Londoner and former policeman Valentine Simatchenko was enjoying the Notting Hill Carnival with his wife Marina when he saw a boy with a knife running and several policement charging after. The photo shows Mr Simatchenko tripping up the attacker, while holding his own camera and shopping bags.

“It happened so fast and I just acted instinctively. All I wanted to do was help the police try and stop him", Yahoo! News reports him saying.

The incident occurred during the annual Notting Hill festival in London. The 16-year old attacked a 20-year old Rio Andre, stabbing him in the abdomen and hand. The attacker has appeared in court on Wednesday "accused of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon".
