Moscow recognizes Libyan Rebel Council

Moscow has recognized Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) as the only legitimate governing authority in the country, according to the Foreign Ministry. Russia has become the 75th country to officially recognize the Council.

Russia hailed the NTC's course on reforms, including forming a new government and a new constitution and carrying out nationwide elections. Earlier Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said Russia had not wanted Gaddafi to remain in power, but opposed NATO's methods of removing him.

On Tuesday more than 60 foreign delegations gathered in Paris for an international conference "Friends of Libya" to discuss Libya's future. Mikhail Markelov, the head of the Russian delegation at the conference, said that the new Libya's government promised that all the Russian-Libyan contracts signed by Muammar Gaddafi, would remain operational and be strictly adhered to.

During all the six months of the Libyan conflict, Russia has been in close contact with the Benghazi opposition. Markelov added that Russia keeps up its position for stopping bloodshed and beginning of the political dialogue.

On August 25, Libyan embassy in Moscow lowered a flag of Jamahiriya and hoisted the new tricolor of the Libyn rebels.

The rebels say the National Transitional Council will soon move its base from Benghazi to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, which now is under their full control.
