CIS Countries Meet in Tajikistan to Resolve Conflicts

On Saturday the members of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) met in Dushanbe, Tajikistan's capital, to discuss further development of the post-Soviet association and some international problems.

It is an anniversary summit, because the CIS will celebrate its 20th anniversary in December. The alliance includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Moldova, and Uzbekistan. Ukraine is not oficially a member, as it has not ratified the CIS Charter, though it is represented at the event as an observer.

Belarus's leader Alexander Lukashenko was absent at the summit, as he was too busy dealing with the economic woes in the country, where the currency has been devalued, according to Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov.

Leaders of a post-Soviet alliance signed a delayed free trade agreement and made their final statement rounding up the summit, which says the main goal at the moment is to form a free trade zone.

"Considering the sustainable growth in foreign trade, CIS member states are seeking to develop economic cooperation based on the CIS economic development strategy until 2020," the statement said.

The CIS summit also urged peaceful resolution to conflicts in post-Soviet countries and agreed to develop cooperation in the fight against terrorism, drug trade and extremism. The countries also said in the statement they would continue to preserve the memory of the courage and heroism of former Soviet republics in the days of World War II.

The next meeting of CIS premiers will be held in October.
