Chelyabinsk's Emblem

Today marks the 275th anniversary of Chelyabinsk. On 2 September 1736, Russian colonel Alexey Tevkelev laid a fortress on the Miass riverside. That fortification was destined for the defence of strings of carts, which were running between abuilding Orenburg and Russian Volga area. Besides, the fortress helped to defence Russian border from nomads forays. In several months 177 families were living in the fortress, and in 1739 Chelyabinsk's population was more than 1,000 people.

In 1781 Chelyabinsk was given a Ñity status. From 1796 to 1917 Chelyabinsk has been a centre of Chelyabinsk's district. In 1934 the city became a regional centre. On 13 October 1976, a millionth citizen was born in Chelyabinsk. Now almost 2 million people live in the city.

Chelyabinsk's City Day has been celebrating since 1969. This year the city's authorities have prepared several big presents for the citizens.

The first present is the opening of an overpass bridge on the Bratya Kashirins' street. It was an uncompleted construction project, which building had been continuing since 2005. But now the overpass movement is finally open.

The second present is the opening of a bridge across the Miass river, near the Krasnaya street. As a result, a new comfortable way for cars moving through the city is now available, which will help to relieve the biggest city's highways from the regular traffic jams.
