Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and especially in the recent years, Russians have been wildly experimenting with wedding styles. Funky costumes, weird ceremonies, unusual colours - everything goes. There have been Goth couples, couples in vinyl clothes, with piercing, even zombies. And now Anakin Skywalker with his beloved Padme Amidala tied the knot in Yekaterinburg.
Ivan Ivanov is a graduate of the Ural Technical University, while his bride, Alexandra, studied Journalism at the Ural State University. They opted for a themed wedding to make the ceremony memorable and not as official, as it usually is.
Relatives and friends, among whom two journalists from the local newspapers, didn't fail to support the Star Wars craze. The groom's father personified Obi-Wan Kenobi, while the bride's uncle dressed up as Master Yoda. The guests turned up dressed as Darth Vader, an imperial stormtrooper, and even Chubakka. The latter's costume was shipped from the U.S. especially for the occasion.
It was only the bride's 85-year-old grandfather who resolutely refused to dress up, stating that he was barely breathing without having to fit himself into a fancy suit.
After the ceremony the guests shouted the famous May the Force Be with You! and crossed laser swords over the newlyweds' heads. The party then moved to the forest nearby to destroy the "Star of Death".
Russia-InfoCentre sincerely wishes all the best to the couple. For more traditional wedding styles, read our features on Wedding Rituals and Old Wedding Styles.
