Seeded in 2011 Rugby World Cup Pool C, Russia has played an historical match against the United States in Yarrow Stadium, New Plymouth, in New Zealand. Unfortunately, the Russian team wasn't able to beat the experienced American team, which won 13-6.

It should be pointed out that the teams have met three times before, and Russia lost all three games, but was able to reduce the margin to 7 points at their last play in June 2011.

Russia is to play its second game with Italy on September 20, then with Ireland on September 25 and with Australia on October 1. The team must take the first or the second place in the group to get to the semi-final.

Russia qualified for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, having replaced Portugal. This is the first ever time the Russian rugby players have got the chance to test their skill at the international tournament.

Though nobody expects Russia to win the World Cup on the first go, the team's coach Kingsley Jones, a former Wales captain, is optimistic about the Russia’s chances in this tournament.

Russian rugby team had a change to take part in the World Cub in 1987, but that initiative was prohibited by Soviet officials, who had strained relations with some participating countries. Then the Russian team was able to come to the tournament through qualification games after the European Rugby Cup, which was held last year. Russians took the second place, which gave them a possibility to get to the World Cup directly.

The 2011 Rugby World Cup is the seventh Rugby World Cup, a quadrennial international rugby union competition inaugurated in 1987. This year New Zealand is the Cup's host country, which has become the great event for all New Zealanders, who are famous for their national passion on rugby. It is the largest sporting event ever held in New Zealand. The organizers expect 95,000 visitors from allover the world to come to New Zealand for the event.
