Russian mathematician Grigory Perelman is put forward for academician candidature as a full member of the prestigious Russian Academy of Sciences. Academics at the St. Petersburg Branch of the Vladimir Steklov Mathematics Institute have vote unanimously for his candidature.
World-renowned Perelman, who won the the Millennium Prize for his solution to the Poincaré conjecture, is ranked ninth on a list of the greatest living geniuses in Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper. Anyway, the matematician avoids his fame and prefers to live without any contacts to outworld. He even refused to accept $1 million Millenium Prize, saying that he believes his contribution in proving the Poincaré conjecture was no greater than that of U.S. mathematician Richard Hamilton.
Vladimir Steklov, the director of the St. Petersburg branch, said it was unclear whether the reclusive academic will to agree to be nominated. The Institute's officials still have not been able to call through to him yet, as Perelman doesn't answer any calls. Moreover, they are not sure that he will agree to gather a large number of documents in order to take part in the RAS membership elections. Steklov said that procedure would not be changed for just one candidate.
