The French retailer Carrefour is to try to enter the Russian market for the second time, informs the newspaper RBC daily. The source says, Majid al Futtaim Group, a Carrefour’s partner in the United Arab Emirates, has offered to take the French hypermarkets into the Russian market via franchise.
In 2009 Carrefour came into the Russian market by its own but had to close within a year. Carrefour opened its hypermarkets in June 2009 and already in October announced about selling its business in Russia. The reason was ‘the absence of potential growth perspectives and M&A deals opportunities’. Later it was decided that Carrefour shops would keep on working till the company sold all its business in the country. But the retailer failed to sell even the shops.
