Russian ombudsman and a prominent lawyer for children rights Pavel Astakhov suggests to open special schools for children of migrants, where they will be able to learn Russian language and culture.
Astakhov said such schools for children, who are not native speakers of the country's state language, are very successful in the USA - the country with a traditionally big emigration flow. Many European countries have such schools too.
In Astakhov's opinion, it is especially important to learn Russian language and culture in junior schools and then children will be able to continue their education in comprehensive schools without any national differentiations.
"Nowhere in the country will this challenge be tougher, or of greater importance, than in Moscow. Some Moscow schools have classes where at least a half of pupils don't speak Russian. Of course, I oppose the idea to divide children between "friends" and "strangers", but the educational system must be adjusted", the ombudsman said.
However, the spokesman of the Moscow Department of Education said, they don't plan to create such school in the near future. Today the children of migrants can go to Moscow's comprehensive schools, even if their parents don't have a registration in the city. If a child can't follow the common school course, he is usually sent to one of the 12 special year long "Schools of the Russian Language".
