Russians Prefer to Browse the Internet from Home

According to the last poll of TNS Gallup-Index Opinion Pollster, during the year, the number of Russian Internet users has grown from 32 million people to 34 million people in Russia, and from 5,8 million people to 6,2 million in Moscow.

      In 2011, 90% of the Internet users prefers to connect to the Internet from their home computers, The last year there were 84% of them. Only 2% use cybercafes and only 1% surfs the web in educational institutions.

      Though many experts are looking forward for the growth of the mobile Internet segment, only 1% Russians uses it (2% in Moscow). In spite of the popularity of Apple devices in Russia, 55% of Russians and 42% of Muscovites use common mobile phones to get to the web. 3% Russians and 7% Muscovites have tablet computers, 42% Russians and 49% Muscovites use communicators and smart-phones. 

      Some experts say the success of Internet mobile technologies in Russia is just a matter of time, but now its developement is hampered by people's distrust and an imperfection of the technical basis.

      According to TNS data, the most popular social networking service among Russians is Vkontakte.ru (Russian analog of Facebook) - 11,5 million unique visitors per day. "Odnoklassniki" ("Classmates") takes the second place with 6,8 million unique visitors per day. Facebook has only 1,2 million Russian visitors per day.

      Yandex retained its status of Russia's largest search engine, serving 54% of all search requests, while Google accounts for 40%. The group of Yandex's sites is also the leader in the whole Russian Internet traffic - 14,5 million clicks per day. The group of Mail.ru sites takes the second place with 12,9 million clicks per day.

      Microsoft software is still retains its leading status among operating systems used by Russians, with nearly 94% of all Russian Internet users having Windows OS installed on their computers. The number, however, decreased by three percentage points in two years.
