Obligatory classification for hotels might be introduced in Russia from next year. The amendments to an Act about tourist activity will be submitted to the State Duma by the Krasnodar deputies.
From July 1, 2011 hotel classification has become obligatory for Sochi hotels, as it is a requirement of the International Olympic Committee. The Krasnodar Governor first initiated introducing the classification for the hotels in Krasnodar region and then took the decision to do this for all Russian hotels.
If the amendments are accepted, only hotels which pass the classification and get the Certificate on acquiring a category, may accept tourists from 2012 summer period.
Only 400 hotels in Russia carry stars. They got this option in 2003. The process of getting stars is voluntarily now.
