Russians won gold medals in men’s saber team event at the 2011 World Fencing Championship, held in Italy’s Catania between October 8 and 16.
Russian team defeated in the final the team from Belarus 45-29. The team's members are Nikolai Kovalyov, Veniamin Reshetnikov, Alexei Yakimenko and Pavel Bykov.
“Psychologically it was very difficult to win this gold considering our unsuccessful performance in personal competitions at the championship,” the five-time world champion said and the team's captain, Alexei Yakimenko, told RIA Novosti. “However, we simply had to do this. It was not only about gold medals, it was about our passes for the Summer Olympic Games in London,” he added.
Russian women's foil team also won gold medals defeating last year’s world champions from Italy 45:44 in the final. The team's members are Inna Deriglazova, Aida Shanaeva, Yevgeniya Lamonova, Larisa Korobeinikova.
