Creator of Russian Sherlock Holmes Marks 80th Birthday (video)

Yesterday a famous Russian film director and author of one of the best "Sherlock Holmes" series, Igor Maslennikov, marked his 80th anniversary.

      Igor Maslennikov was born on 20 October 1931 in Nizhny Novgorod. After moving to St. Petersburg, he entered Journalist Department of the Leningrad University, graduated from in in 1954, worked on the television. In 1965 he entered the Higher Directors’ Courses at Lenfilm Studio and upon graduation found himself one of the studio directors. His most renowed works are several films about Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, which were made with a great attention to historical details, scenario and actors' casting and so were recognized as one of the best Sherlock Holmes screen versions. Maslennikov's popularity was also supported by success of the drama "Winter Cherry". However, the director’s filmography numbers almost thirty serious and profound works in various genres.

Your films are notable for the original impressive style and excellent casting, so they were commended by viewers and professional critics. And such works as "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson", "Winter Cherry" and others became great events for Russian cinematograph. Your are also famous for your important educational talent, as you help young people to realize their creative abilities", the official celebrating telegram from the Kremlin says.

      Igor Maslennikov is a People's Artist of the Soviet Union, the laureate of the Russian Federation State Award, the author of numerous books about cinema. He also gives lectures in VGIK (All-Russian Institute for Cinematography) and St. Petersburg State University of Cinema and Television.
