On Wednesday Russia and Georgia signed an agreement that will let Russia to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) possibly till the end of the year.
The deal provides in particular for the deployment of international observers to monitor the movement of goods across sections of the borders of the former Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The agreement was signed in Genève. Switzerland was a negotiator at the Russia-Georgia talks.
Russia has been trying to join the organization since 1993. Georgia was the only WTO member who had blocked Russia’s joining the organization. The agreement of all member states is necessary for accession to the WTO.
