Vakhtangov Drama Theatre in Moscow first opened its doors 90 years ago, on November 13, 1921. Standing in the middle of the Old Arbat Street, opposite the Actor's House, it has long epitomised the magic worlds of stage performance. The actors and directors there at different times included Yuri Zavadsky, Mikhail Ulyanov, and many others.
The anniversary was marked by the play Quayside, staged by Rimas Tuminas and starring the theatre's leading actors. The play is in fact a repertory of extracts from the works by Bertoldt Brecht, Ivan Bunin, Friedrich Duerrenmatt, Arthur Miller, and others. The spectators could see and applaud such brilliant Russian actors, as Yuri Yakovlev, Yulia Borisova, Vladimir Etush, Irina Kupchenko, Vasily Lanovoi.
The Drama Theatre was founded in 1921. The very first performance there was the play "The Miracle of St. Anthony" by Maurice Meterlink. Another famous and longest-running play is "Princess Turandot" after the tale by Carlo Gozzi. The Theatre was named after its founder, Evgeny Vakhtangov, in 1926.
