Non-Political Gesture by Russian Newsreader
Tatyana Limanova Makes the Gesture

Tatyana Limanova, a Russian newsreader of the REN-TV channel, was dismissed on Tuesday because of the showing the finger during live news broadcast.

The incident took place on November 14, when the REN-TV presenter Tatyana Limanova made the indecent gesture while reading Obama's name mentioned due to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference.

"Dmitry Medvedev has become the new head of the APEC conference. Earlier this post was taken by the U.S. President Barack Obama", said Limanova and then showed the finger to the camera.

But REN-TV said Limanova's gesture was not aimed at Obama, but was addressed to her “editorial staff” colleagues, who were standing off camera and trying to distract her, for a joke. And Limanova didn't know she was on camera when she made it.

But the REN-TV management didn't find these explanations convincing. They said this action is the gravest violation of on-air discipline and an unprofessional behaviour.

The video footage with that incident was made by one of the viewers and soon became very popular in the Internet. But then there wasn't any reaction of the REN-TV bosses or penalty for Limanova. The measures were taken only a week later, when the foreign press took notice of this video and considered it as an insult of Barack Obama. On November 23, The Daily Telegraph wrote an article about that incident saying that "the scandal was accurately related to the worsening of the Russia-USA bilateral relations".

Limanova was one of the best newsreaders of the REN-TV channel. In 2010 she was awarded TEFI (Russian prestigious television award) as "The Best Present of a News Broadcast".
