The exhibition of Francisco Goya will be opened tomorrow at Perm Art Gallery. The museum will present a famous series of prints “Los Caprichos”.
“Los Caprichos” is a set of 80 aquatint prints created by the Spanish artist in 1797 and 1798, and published as an album in 1799. The exhibition is a truly unique event as this masterpiece of graphic arts is a great rarity for Russian museums. The full copies of “Los Caprichos” are available only at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow and at the State Museum of Fine Arts in Irbit.
"Capricho" can be translated as a whim or a fantasy. The term has an ironical sense,as the artist analyzes the human fate and presents a satire on man’s follies and vices: greed, cruelty, ignorance, cowardice. Real and fantastic characters reflect political, social and religious tendencies of the society.
The series consists of 80 images, each goes with a brief explanation, added by Goya. “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters”, the most famous work from this group of prints, can be also seen at the exhibition.
