Exhibition of Soviet New Year Gifts Opens in Moscow

Exhibition “Happy New Year, dear comrades!” opens in the History Museum in Moscow on 21 December.

The main exhibits are various New Year toys of the 1900s-1980s, among them are those made of glass, cotton-wool, papier-mache, cardboard, and handmade toys.

Fur-trees with decorations and toys are located in chronological order: fur-trees of the 1930s, of the Great Patriotic War period, and the 1950s-1960s. There are also special thematic Christmas trees: a space fur-tree, a fairy tale fur-tree, etc.

The first official celebration of Christmas took place on the eve of 1991, when the first Christmas fur-tree was decorated in GUM Department Store in Red Square.

The exhibition runs till February, 27.
