Scientists from Novosibirsk are going to create genetic passports for plants in order to restore endangered species.
Today there are about 27,000 species of land plants in the world, but a third of them may disappear in the next few years before they will be explored. Biologists from Novosibirsk Botanical Garden are concerned about this issue, therefore they have decided to create DNA passports. Regular analysis of DNA helps to prevent the degeneration of plant population.
Random crossing of closely related species leads to diseases and negative changes to useful properties of plants. Genetic passports will help to accurately determine species and control the process of reproduction. This make possible to get necessary seeds into wild nature and to restore those rare representatives of siberian flora, which have the highest priority.
