The story of the unique wildlife preserve Crane Homeland in Taldom District of the Moscow Region, which was included in the plan of peatbog rewetting is developing further.
Now the preserve, where several thousand gray cranes gather annually, is facing the danger of cottage build-up.
Initially the land was supposed to get the status of a park under the program of the regional government, however this year the wildlife preserve has been excluded from the financing list according to changes in the target program Ecology of Moscow Region in 2011-2013. As a result the entire site is under the threat of being built-up with cottages.
Regional authorities explain that maintaining the park infrastructure is too expensive for the region’s budget. Meanwhile, it is one of the few vacant sites of the Moscow Region, where one can see lots of rare birds, including waterfowls.
