During excavations in Rurik Site near Veliki Novgorod archeologists have found four hanks of gold wire, which most likely belonged to jewelers of the 10th century.
For the first time researchers have found whole hanks thin gold wire; earlier they managed to find only scraps of it.
This find is evidence to the fact that jewelers worked in Rurik settlement, and thus it shows to prosperity of this settlement. The wire is made of very fine gold.
According to chronicles, the site of ancient settlement located at the source of Volkhov River from Lake Ilmen, was the residence of the Novgorod princes in the 10th century. It was named after its founder Prince Rurik.
After archeological excavations are completed in the Rurik Site, an archeological and tourist center or a nature and history museum reserve is planned to be opened there.
