Russia Temporarily Places Embargo on Meat Import from Europe
Russian places embargo on European meat import

As of February 1, 2012 Russia temporarily restricts the import of meat from Europe, particularly from Germany, Holland, and France. This is due to the Schmallenberg virus that has been detected in Germany in January 2012.

Named after a German town where it was first reported, the virus that causes a variety of symptoms most importantly results in the high percentage of stillbirths in goats, sheep, and cattle. The calves, lambs, and kids that are born safely are too deformed to carry on living. The virus has so far affected around 400 farms in Europe, mostly in Germany and Holland, with several more farms in Britain and France. At present, it is assumed that the virus is spreaded by the blood-sucking insects. The possibility of its affecting humans has not yet been established, although not denied.

The decision of Rosselkhoznadzor, the federal service for veterinary and phytosanitary surveillance, follows the discussion with the representatives of respective services from the affected countries. Russia has also offered assistance from the biologists in helping the European scientists establish the causes and methods of prevention and treatment of the disease.
