Pancake Week (or Maslenitsa) - the last week before Lent, will be celebrated in Russia at the end of February. A big number of traditional colorful events will be held in various Russian cities all across the country.
If you are going to visit Moscow on February 24-26, you will have a chance to participate in folk festivities in Gorky Park. The organizers have prepared an interesting and diverse program with open air celebrations and tasting of delicious hot pancakes.
Another ancient Russian town Veliky Novgorod will also host Pancake Week on February 25-26. Tourists can enjoy amazing atmosphere of the festival: folk performances, a carnival procession, wedding ceremonies, outdoor winter games and amusements, horse riding, a custom of burning a straw doll, concerts, fairs of handicrafts and arts, tasting of pancakes and hot drinks. Guests will be able to take part in a theatrical tour to the Middle Ages and to learn about rituals of the past.
Some events will require purchasing tickets (200-450 rubles).
In addition, throughout the Pancake week, from 20 to 26 February, a number of restaurants in the city have prepared a special menu, which includes many kinds of pancakes and fritters.
