Record Award Fee for Russian Olympic Winners

Record Award Fee for Russian Olympic Winners

The Russian government will give awards of $130,000 to Russian athletes who win a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Silver medalists will be awarded with $82,000, while bronze medals will be worth $56,000.

"Award fee amount depends on sports organizations in Russia, which are usually supported by Russia's richest people, because sport is a very popular placement of funds in our country", vice-president of Russian Olympic Committee, Akhmed Balilov, said on Friday. He believes that such big awards will make Russia a masterful competitor in Olympic Games 2012 and also will help to restore Russia's reputation as a Olympic superpower.

The incentives are similar in size to those offered at the Vancouver Games in 2010, where Russia, a traditional winter sports powerhouse, delivered its most miserly medal haul in Olympic history, finishing 11th in the final standings with 3 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze.
