Organizers of the new opposition action, called "The Big White Circle", expect 34,000 people to line up around the Garden Ring in downtown Moscow and so to "encircle the Kremlin” on February 26.
"On February 26 we will encircle the city's centre. At exactly 2 p.m. Moscow time we will take place on the internal side of the Garden Circle and join our hands," it is said in the official statement in the event's official Facebook group. There is also a special website - 26feb.ru - which is still under construction.
Organizers said they need 34,000 people to cover the entire 16-kilometer Garden Ring. It it still unclear whether the human chain will block all road intersections along the road or what to do if more than the required number of people show up. It is planned to solve these problems during the public discussions over the event.
A pro-governmental rally will take place in downtown Moscow on February 23. Organizers said up to 200,000 would take part. Organizers of the rally also expect Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to show up, though his participation in the action is not confirmed.
The Previous pro-Kremlin event on February 4 gathered about 80-140,000 people, though media claimed many were state employees forced to attend. Several opposition leaders said they were going to attend the pro-government rally to “explain their position” to participants.
