Charles Darwin would be happy. Monkeys in an Izhevsk zoo, Udmurtia region, learned to clean their cages and take the garbage outside.
According to the zoo's press service, monkeys first watched zookeepers at their work and then started following their example.
A pair of chimpanzees, Yasha and Jessica, grabbed mops, rags and trash bags in order to clean up their two-floor cage. Of course, they mainly imitated the people's work, but did it so studiously that the zoo's workers decided to give them devices for cleaning on a regular basis.
Yasha took special care to clean the glass walls of its cage, “spitting on them before wiping” them. The duo eventually split cleaning duties, with Jessica sweeping the cage’s ground floor and putting trash in the bag and Yasha taking similar care of the upper floor, the zoo added.
Unfortunately, other monkeys were not so quick-witted, as they took mops and rags more like funny toys.
The zoo's press service also added all the zoo workers kept their job, as monkeys, however diligent, couldn't do the cleaning as good as people.
