Writer Grigory Chkhartishvili, known under the penname Boris Akunin, has announced in his Livejournal a new TV series based on adventures of his famous character - detective Erast Fandorin.
According to Akunin, the 12-series film will be based on his novel Diamond Chariot. The film director is Sergei Ursulyak, well-known as the director of the sensational series Liquidation and Isaev.
Akunin had long considered the possibility of screening his novel Diamond Chariot, however, “it is not easy to transfer on screen this huge thing, where most of the action is set in Japan of the Meiji era. Russia of 1905 with blowing up bridges, sinking barges and street chases – that is all quite a nightmare for the producer”. According to Akunin, shooting of the Japanese part of the action will take place in Japan, as he has always wanted.
Akunin’s books about adventures of the detective Erast Fandorin in Russia have become basis for three feature films: Azazel, The Turkish Gambit and The State Counsellor. One more (American) screen version of his novel Azazel – The Winter Queen – is expected to go on general release in 2012.
