Monument to a seaman’s wife is not going to appear in the Leninsky Prospekt in the near future.
The project that was confirmed as far back as 2006 to be set up at Morskaya Embankment of Vasilevsky Island and has been “straying” around Petersburg in search of a new place for 4 years has been rejected by the town-planning and architecture committee. The councilors were displeased with the size of the monument, which they found too big.
As a result the work, which won the competition and collected the majority of positive opinions of Petersburg dwellers, has been rejected definitively and irrevocably. The customer has been recommended to hold a new competition.
The initiative to set up a monument to a seaman’s wife appeared after the tragic wreck of the submarine “Kursk” in 2000. The idea was initiated by submariners of the Northern fleet. The 2006 competitive selection lasted till 2006. Both the development of the monument’s designs and all competition events were financed by sponsors only. It remains unknown whether a new competition will be held again.
