Archeological excavations will be carried out on the former site of the hotel “Russia” in the heart of Moscow, near the Red Square.
According to the chief archeologist of Moscow Leonid Kondrashev, the first stage of works was already conducted and the research showed that the cultural layer is 6 meters deep.
In particular, archeologists found the base of the wall of Kitay Gorod (China Town) and a fragment of an estate building of the 15th century. Excavation will go on, and the unearthed artifacts will be exposed in a park, which is planned to be created on the area of the demolished hotel. Thus, an open-air museum may appear there.
The hotel “Russia” was decided to be taken down in 2004; the demolition works were finished in 2010.
