Proun Gallery at Winzavod has opened the exhibition Family Portrait dedicated to the couple of avant-garde artists Nadezhda Udaltsova and Alexander Drevin.
The exhibition telling about every-day life of the artists presents their self-portraits and portraits of their son, nurse, friends who stayed in their house, and pets. The exposition, in particular, features the last family portrait painted by Alexander Drevin in 1938 – the year of his death, when he was shot during Stalinist reprisals.
Family portraits of Nadezhda Udaltsova and Alexander Drevin, especially the works of the 1930s are extremely dramatic and tragic. According to the critic Andrey Sarabyanov, their paintings referred to Russian expressionism, are notable for special expressiveness and energy.
The exhibition Family Portrait will last till March, 31st, 2012.
