Nepokorennye Gallery in Novosibirsk presents the project Portrait for a Meal by the 27-year-old artist Sergey Balovin.
For a week the artists has been drawing portraits of Novosibirsk dwellers in exchange for feeding him. Sergey Balovin started the unusual experiment on surviving in different cities without having money a year ago, when he lived in China.
“I rented an apartment in Shanghai, but it was almost empty. For furniture there was only a sofa. Then I got an idea to make advertising, so that people would bring me something useful for household and I would make their portraits in exchange” – the artist explains.
Fellow countrymen – Russians living in China - responded to the announcement right away. Shortly such an unusual project became known in Russia as well.
The work doest not take a lot of time from the artist. Sergey draws one portrait in black ink within about 20 minutes. However, he has a rule to draw two portraits of the same person: one for the customer and another one for the exhibition.
