Today, on March 13, Ka-52 (Hokum B) attack helicopter crashed during a training flight near Torzhok, Tver region. One crewman was killed and another badly injured.
The helicopter was found by a rescue group some 10 kilometers west of Torzhok airport at 08.45 am (Moscow time). According to the group’s report the navigator has died and the survived pilot is now receiving medical assistance. His condition is considered as grave.
A Defense Ministry investigation group has been set up to find the causes of the crash. Some critics say the probable cause of accident can be adverse weather conditions - there was intermittent visibility in the airfield's territory, and all pilots made self-reliant decisions for flights.
A military airfield in Torzhok includes the centre for training and tactical employment of Russia's army aviation. This time Ka-52 was making his usual training flight under control of experienced first-class pilot. The navigator was young officer.
Ka-52 helicopter was equipped with ejection seats but the pilots weren't able to use it in time, according to preliminary investigation.
