Madonna to Support Freedoms in Russia

Madonna promises to speak up for the gay community during her upcoming show in St Petersburg.

Having described herself as a “freedom fighter”, the legendary pop-singer was one of the first to express her opinion about the scandalous law against homosexual propaganda. In particular, she called this ban of the gay lifestyle promotion a "ridiculous atrocity".

Madonna has also announced on her Facebook page that she will come to St. Petersburg on August 9 “to speak up for the gay community, to support the gay community and to give strength and inspiration to anyone who is or feels oppressed".

However, Madonna herself can be threatened by the new law. Its author, Vitaly Milonov, has already promised that if Madonna speaks her mind about this law, she will be punished: the singer could be fined 5,000 rubles ($170), and the concert organizers could lose up to 500,000 rubles.

Moreover, Milonov himself has promised to come to Madonna's concert "to control its moral content".

The new law approved by St. Petersburg assembly has aroused much discontent among the country’s gay rights and human rights watchdogs, as well as common people. Besides Madonna, British actor and comedian Stephen Fry also recently voiced outrage over it, describing its authors as “fantastical monsters”.
