On April 18 the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow will open the exhibition "Victor Vasnetsov . Sketches of Frescoes of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev.
Viktor Vasnetsov (1848–1926), one of the best-known Russian artists of the second half of the 19th – early 20th century, is first of all known as the author of paintings on folk and historical plots. However, the artist also paid great attention to religious painting. During the spiritual crisis, Viktor Vasnetsov believed, the Church was meant to unite the people, whereas the revived church art could become accessible and understandable and could express national ideals.
The exhibition from the Gallery funds will present Vasnetsov's sketches for frescoes of the Vladimir cathedral (1885-1896), one of the main cathedrals of Kiev. The exhibition will run till July 28.
