Legendary American rock star Patti Smith has recorded her new album, inspired by the Mikhail Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita".
As Patti Smith told the press in her interview, Bulgakov’s mystical novel has become the source of inspiration for her new musical album. She named her latest recording "Banga" after Pontius Pilate’s dog in the acclaimed Russian book. It is also the name of one of the songs.
According to the Pitchfork journal, the "Banga" will be issued by Columbia 5 label on June 2012. The album features a ballad-tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, a birthday song for Johnny Depp and a track dedicated to the courageous Japanese people, hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami last year. There is also a song "Tarkovsky (The Second Stop is Jupiter)", probably named after famous Russian film director, but the details of this song's creation are still unknown.
Bulgakov's great novel "The Master and Margarita" has repeatedly inspired musicians from different countries. After reading the newly published novel back in 1967, Mick Jagger wrote the Rolling Stones hit Sympathy for the Devil. Some contemporary artists, such as The Tea Party and Franz Ferdinand, also dedicated songs to that book.
