On Tuesday, April 10, the population of the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk reached one million.
The mark was reached at 7:40 p.m. local time, on Tuesday. The one-millionth resident is a newborn baby girl. Her mother will be probably presented with a special gift, according to Krasnoyarsk's mayor Edkham Akbulatov.
The 2010 federal census showed that the city's population was about 975,000 people. In March 2012 that number has increased by 23,000 people. Several city bodies, such as the Federal Migration Service and others, expected the one-millionth resident to be born on April 9-10.
Now Krasnoyarsk is the 13th city with a population over one million in Russia. The other cities are: Moscow (11.541 million), St. Petersburg (4.899 million), Novosibirsk (1.475 million), Yekaterinburg (1.353 million), Nizhny Novgorod (1.252 million), Samara (1.166 million), Omsk (1.154 million), Kazan (1.145 million), Chelyabinsk (1.131 million), Rostov-on-Don (1.091 million), Ufa (1.066 million) and Volgograd (1.021 million).
And several more cities, such as Perm, Voronezh, Saratov, Krasnodar and Tolyatti, are going to reach that number soon.
A city with a million population can lay claim to financial preferences on local and federal level.
